  • Apple explores AI to transform AirPods into heart rate monitors effectively.
  • Phonocardiograms allow non-invasive tracking of heart sounds through earbuds daily.
  • Research blends audio tech with health insights for user convenience.

Apple is looking into ways to use AI to make its AirPods into advanced tools for health monitoring. The study presents how existing AI models used for speech analysis can now analyze heart sound recordings from AirPods, possibly allowing them to check a user’s heart rate.

It was demonstrated that AI can effectively analyze audio recorded by AirPods to predict heart rate. By recording heartbeat sounds, a phonocardiogram enables cardiovascular health monitoring while individuals go about their daily lives. It improves on what Apple already does with the Apple Watch, such as heart rate variability tracking, and supports the company's goals to enhance its wearable health capabilities.

According to reports from Apple Insider, the research is meant to help AirPods do more in health monitoring. In 2024, a patent was registered with 9to5Mac that describes AirPods being used to measure heart disease, temperature and other physiological data. With its experiments using AI, the study offers new ways to interpret audio information, making heart monitoring easier and more available for people.

Since the technology is still being worked on, its likely effects are very important. With successful implementation, Air Pods might act as audio speakers and personal health trackers. Apple decided to act on this move since its rivals like Google often feature top AI technology in wearables. Yet, there are still some issues to work through, mainly with accuracy, user privacy and getting regulatory permission for medical-grade use.

As Apple prepares for WWDC 2025, anticipation grows for potential announcements about AI-enhanced features across its product lineup, including Air Pods. While no official timeline for this feature’s release exists, this research underscores Apple’s commitment to innovation, potentially redefining how we monitor health through everyday devices like earbuds.
